Help / A useful way forward

Choose the right download

Editable JSON, PDF, text, CSV, and calendar copies each do a different job.

Choose the copy for the job

What each download can do
CopyUseful forKeep in view
Editable / reusable JSON (.json)Reopening and continuing work in its Brass Charter tool. Can contain the complete book, private notes, history, and related records. Keep a copy for yourself.
PDF (.pdf)A fixed reading or sharing document.Check the selected report and every page. It does not restore editable tool fields.
Text (.txt)Reading, copying, or adapting words elsewhere.Formatting is simple. It is not a full backup.
CSV (.csv)A selected table for spreadsheet work; supported mapping imports in specific tools.Relationships and history are not fully preserved. Import rules depend on the destination tool.
Calendar (.ics)Selected dated items from Deadlines & Renewals.A one-time copy, not live reminders or a restorable register. Reimporting can duplicate events.

Getting an actual PDF

  1. Choose the report or customer-facing document you want, then review its preview.
  2. Where Download PDF is available, use it for a .pdf file. A .txt download is still text, even if it contains the same words.
  3. If you use Print / Save as PDF, choose your browser or system’s PDF destination in the print dialog and complete the save.
  4. Open the resulting PDF and check names, figures, page breaks, and what should remain private before sharing.

The file opens as code or has an unfamiliar icon

That can be normal for JSON: it is an editable data file for the tool. Return to Open saved work and select it there. You do not need to edit the code or change which desktop application opens JSON.

Check an editable file

No download appeared

Check the browser’s Downloads list and any save prompt first. Look for a blocked or failed download and the actual file extension. If the page is still open, you can prepare the download again. A similar filename with “(1)” is usually a separate browser-created copy; review which one you need.

Keep your open draft?

Continuing will discard your unsaved changes. You can return to the draft and save or download it first.
