People & guidance

Find the
right help.

You do not need all the answers to ask a useful question.

Whether you are exploring an idea, taking on a business, or improving familiar work, start with what you would like help to change.

Build my help brief

01 / Understand the help

What would make the difference?

These are starting points, not fixed job titles. Someone may offer more than one kind of help; ask which part they would actually take on.

A task to
get done.

You have a piece of work in mind and need time, skills, or an extra pair of hands to complete it.

For exampleA clearer booking process, a better spreadsheet, or help organizing a handover.

Make clear: what should be delivered and how you will use it.

A decision to
think through.

You would like a useful sounding board, another perspective, or help building your own skills.

For exampleTalking with an experienced owner or mentor about what to test next.

Make clear: the question you want to explore and the experience that would help.

A specialist
question.

You need relevant expertise to investigate, explain, or review a particular issue.

For exampleAn accountant reviewing business figures or a lawyer explaining an agreement.

Make clear: the specific issue, relevant location, and qualifications the work needs.

It may be a mix. You can begin by asking someone to help define the problem, then agree a separate piece of work.

02 / Prepare the conversation

Ask enough to
understand the fit.

A first conversation can help you understand what someone offers before you decide on a piece of work.

Relevant experience

What similar work have you done? What would be different in my situation? Can you explain your approach in terms I understand?

Scope and responsibilities

What would I receive? What would you need from me? Who would do the work, and what would fall outside it?

Fees and availability

How would you charge? What could cost extra? When could you begin, and how would we agree any changes?

Qualifications and fit

What relevant qualifications or registration can I check? Does your experience fit this work and its location?

Reviewing the work

When would we check progress? What would show that this piece of work is complete? How would questions be handled afterward?

From a broad worry to a useful request

Start with one
piece of work.

A fictional example

“Our administration is a mess.”

“Booking details arrive in two places. Could you help us walk through the process and try one clearer way to hand a booking over?”

The second request gives someone a place to begin. A conversation can then establish what a sensible first piece of work would include.

03 / Places to look

Take your question somewhere useful.

Use a resource relevant to your location. Ask the service about eligibility, availability, and any fees before arranging support.
